Seize the Wood - Turn the Wood

"Finishing Secrets"

by Russ Fairfield

"This photo will introduce me as 'The Woodturner', while reminding us that we often find strange things inside of the wood that we use.

I moved to Tallahassee, FL in '83 and found myself surrounded by more species of trees than I had ever dreamed possible.

A hurricane that fall gave me access to more wood than I could use in a lifetime. Following our meeting while collecting wood, Mel Lindquist and John Read awakened me to the art of turned wood. I bought a General-260 lathe, added riser blocks to it, and I was seriously into woodturning. I haven't stopped since."

(**in case you can't read the fine print on the cover)

"Finishing is the crown jewel that we place on our work to distinguish it from being just another piece of turned wood.

Everything is here, the surface preparation, the finishes and how they are used on real turning projects.  Several new things have been added to this video version of "Finishing Secrets" - waxes as a finish and as a grain enhancement, the buffing wheel and CA glue as a grain sealer and as a finish."

**personal note: this is the most in-depth video you will ever find about sanding, finishes, waxes and oils.   I started taking notes on important points, after 4 pages of "notes", I had brain drain and was only on the second disc!  I learned how to make my own finish for 1/10th the cost!

"This is everything I know about finishing turned wood."

"If it isn't here, you don't need to know about it."

Russ is an active member of Woodcentral, on that site he has "Russ's Corner" where he has many good articles.

Russ Fairfield has shared most of these "secrets" in articles in the AAW Journal, various chapter newsletter and on message boards on the internet.  This is a 3 disc set, each almost 2 hrs. long.  The first disc covers wood preparation techniques, hand and power sanding, discusses just about every sandpaper available and several tips like filling cracks with CA and artist charcoal.

In the second disc, Russ discusses why to use a finish and why not to use a finish.  He goes into wonderful detail about waxes, oils, shellac, varnish, lacquer and demonstrates how to use (and not use) each one.

**personal note: what I loved is he demonstrated what can go wrong, what it will look like and how to fix it. - Ruth

The third disc covers friction polishes, CA glue as a finish and how to hide the freeze line which occurs when the CA dries before you finish the whole application.  Russ demonstrates putting on the finish and lubricant at the same time without mixing them together, explains the differences between drying and non-drying oils.  Russ tells you what is actually in every can of any finish on the market and how to make your own.

**Warning - if you think you're not interested in one aspect or procedure in this video, do not skip it because Russ will refer to "remember that little tip about ...." and you'll only have to go back and watch the whole video to find it.   I know.... I did it!  Be sure to check out the hand wheel on Russ's lathe.
